Where Are We
This is a small, quiet family-run park 300 yards (3 minutes walk) from the picturesque beach, inn and shop at Wisemans Bridge, yet it is still in the heart of the countryside.
Wisemans Bridge is best known for its inn and rocky beaches. It nestles on the coast road between Amroth and Saundersfoot and when the sea is out you are able to walk across the sands to either. You can also walk to Saundersfoot by going through the tunnels that once formed part of the railway link between the local mines and Saundersfoots harbour.
The beach's claim to fame is that is was used in 1944 for the rehearsals of the D Day landings under the watchful eye of Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill himself. Mrs. O M Cooke the proprietor of the park was actually there when these rehearsals took place, her parents, Jack and "Artie" Mathias, then kept the Wisemans Bridge Inn. Below is what she recalled:- "There was tremendous excitement when it was realised the great man himself was in our midst. He and his companions stopped by the Inn for refreshments and we carried trays of tea, sandwiches and Welsh cakes out to his car, which was flying a small Union Jack from the bonnet. Mr Churchill's daughter Sarah, who was his chauffeur and in army uniform, helped us carry the trays. She was a charming girl. I remember amphibious vehicles called DUKWS coming out of the sea and up on to the beach. They were filled with British and American troops. Anti-aircraft guns were placed in strategic positions at Wiseman's Bridge, but whether they were part of the exercise or there to protect Mr Churchill, I could not say."
